Happy December to you all! I hope you are finding joy in the things that you are doing. I am thankful for all the hard work you all do. I know our clients certainly are and the peace of mind it gives the families is truly a gift.
I have been thinking a lot about our clients and the great desire they have to age in place. I feel that movement and mobility is something that can keep them where they want to be for a longer and healthier time and be more engaged.
I think there are so many things we as caregivers can do to help with mobility, The simple encouragement to go get the mail or go grocery shopping or perhaps indulge in getting some ice cream or a good cup of Joe somewhere.
I know this time of year keeps us all so busy and perhaps even a little overwhelmed. I hope when we get to our clients house we can take a deep breath, let go of life and focus on caring and finding joy for yourself and for the one you care for during the time you are there.
If at all possible be as active and engaging as they allow or tolerate! Walk or have them stand on their own while you are by their side for safety. Going for a drive sometimes getting in and out of a car is a lot of work! Go to stores and look at Christmas decorations. There are things they love and enjoy doing which maybe will motivate them to move a little more than they have been.
I am going to share a video from WebMD. It is about 4 and a half minutes long. I hope this gives you some insight on the importance of being mobile. However as winter is fast approaching be mindful of falls. Falls are the number one cause of decreased independence for our clients. So make sure if needed you are there for stanf by assist as they walk.
May you find joy in the place that you are at this season. We are grateful for you all and hope that you feel the spirit of the season and as always find the joy my friends!
